Texas barbecue is more than food — it’s culture, community, and serious competition. From local cookoffs to major sanctioned events, Texas hosts BBQ competitions all year long for teams, backyard cooks, and fans who just love the scene.

This 2026 Texas BBQ competition calendar is a roundup of major sanctioned cookoffs and notable public events across the state. We’ll keep updating this list as new event details are published or schedules change. The best official calendars to monitor throughout the year are the IBCA and Champions Barbecue Alliance event schedules.

What to Expect at a Texas BBQ Competition

Texas BBQ competitions vary by organizer and sanctioning body, but many events include core meat categories like brisket, ribs, and chicken, along with optional jackpot or specialty categories. Larger events may also include live music, public tasting areas, vendors, and family activities. The Houston Rodeo World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest, for example, features more than 250 teams and includes major contest categories plus live entertainment.

Why Texas BBQ Competitions Are Worth Following

Even if you are not cooking in one, Texas cookoffs are a great way to:

  • learn from serious pitmasters
  • discover regional BBQ styles
  • support local communities and fundraisers
  • find inspiration for your own backyard cooks

For teams, they are also one of the best ways to sharpen timing, consistency, box presentation, and meat prep under pressure.

Before You Go

Schedules can and do change. Some competitions are postponed, moved, or updated after the initial calendar is published, so always click through to the official event page or sanctioning body calendar before making travel plans. That matters especially for spring events, where public listings already show a few postponements.
